Frequently Asked Questions
What is Penultimate Fantasy?
Penultimate Fantasy is a concept for a musical inspired by the video games I love and grew up with, primarily JRPGs, especially of the SNES era.
Is it based on any particular game?
As the name implies, it will take a lot of inspiration from the Final Fantasy series, but also games like Chrono Trigger, Nier: Automata, Persona, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. It’s not meant to be a recreation of the stories of any of these games, but instead it is inspired by them and uses what elements make sense narratively (or is just plain fun and I can find a way to work them in).
Who is behind this project?
My name is Sophia Ly, also known as Sophia Cactuar. I am a software developer by day, but I also have an interested in both video games and musicals, hence this project.
Are there any other collaborators?
Not as of yet. I will likely bring on more people once the core concept is more established, but right now the project is in its infancy.
How did this project come about?
I’ve had creating a musical on my bucket list for some time and finally got an idea that I felt passionate about. When I looked into seeing what musicals exist about or based on video games, there’s honestly not much there.
I think the biggest one out there is The Trail to Oregon! by Team Starkid based on The Oregon Train, which is quite hilarious, but I wanted to create something that wasn’t a comedy (although it will have comedic moments) but cover a breadth of emotions.
I was excited to learn about Persona 3: The Weird Masquerade, but the parts that I watched was more of a play with choreographed background music than what I would personally label a musical.
There’s multiple Reddit threads asking about it but nothing like what I pictured in my head. And so I sought to create it.
Is Penultimate Fantasy the final name?
Right now it’s technically a working title, but I’ve grown quite fond of it and it might end up keeping it.
